Kingston is receiving more than $672,525 from the McGuinty government to help enhance programming, attract more visitors and boost the local economy, MPP John Gerretsen announced on behalf of Minister of Tourism Peter Fonseca last week.

Fort Henry is one of 90 festivals and events across the province that will receive funding through Celebrate Ontario 2008, launched in 2006 to support the growth of festivals and events.

“Celebrate Ontario gives Kingston and communities across Ontario a chance to shine by supporting the growth of local events that draw more visitors and help our businesses prosper,” Gerretsen said.

This year, the McGuinty government has more than doubled its investment in Celebrate Ontario to $10 million.

“Festivals and events play a major role in boosting tourism across the province,” Fonseca said. “Tourism is an important economic driver and ensuring its long-term growth is part of our plan to strengthen Ontario’s economic advantage.”

The funding breakdown is as follows: $300,000 to the Kingston Bike Festival, $255,000 to Fort Fright in Fort Henry, $60,000 to World Heritage Music Festival in Fort Henry, and $57,525 to the Canada Dance Sport.

“Absolutely outstanding funding news for Fort Henry,” said John Robertson, manager of Fort Henry.

“The Celebrate Ontario funding for Fort Fright, due to launch in the fall of 2008 and the UNESCO World Heritage Music Festival to be presented the last week in July, will open the Fort to new customer demographics and extend our operating season, assisting our family of tourism partners in Kingston to sell more rooms, retail products, food and beverage while continuing to promote Kingston as one of Ontario’s first and only World Heritage destinations.
