Jamaica Poetry Festival leads in social transformation

Jamaica Poetry Festival leads in social transformation

Manchester, July 18, 2016. The importance and the relevance of Poetry and the creative arts come into sharp focus at this point in time. This is consistent with the quest for social cohesion and social harmony. Increasingly, the artist has an urgent role to play in the lives of our youth and our communities, especially at this moment of social decay and global uncertainties. With this in mind, it helps to be reminded that at the very root of our social ills, there's a deficiency in positive and socially responsible and creative self-expression. In light of this reality, the cultural arts and the cultural practitioners have a redemptive role to play in creating the required paradigm shift and the emerging social revolution.

Why Poetry

In shaping the new social order, Poetry has a very critical function and pride of place because Poetry is the currency of the mind and language of the soul. Hence, the social health of Jamaica and the world needs Poetry for it's ventilation, renewal and social transformation.

In keeping with the international mandate of Poetry and the role of Arts in communities, Jamaica Poetry Festival (JPF) shall honour and celebrate in the spirit and council of our designation, The International Arts Edition. Accordingly, Mutabaruka, (GMG), shall receive the Life Time Achievement Award for his role in the social revolution. Tribute will also be paid to three literary giants, namely: Mervyn Morris, Kamau Brathwaite and June Jordan.
